ST. LOUIS — “I have the best job in the whole world.”

For Jean Sokora, her job at Dunnica Sobering Support Center goes beyond your usual 9-5. It has been a passion and purpose for over 45 years. 

“I am a person in long term recovery, and I have dedicated my entire life to help other people,” says Sokora. 

Dunnica Sobering Support Center offers a safe, supportive space for all individuals under the influence of alcohol or other substances, even those who are under insured. The center is designed as a diversion program, meaning an alternative to jail or the emergency room.

Open 24/7, 365 days a year, the 12-bed crisis stabilization unit provides a place to rest, reflect, and begin the journey toward recovery. Visitors can stay up to 23 hours at a time. The center offers services beyond their stabilization unit, too. Jean shares the importance of meeting these clients where they are. 

“You may not be ready to do anything but come to sobering over and over until you are ready to do something else.”
